​A coalition of opposition lawmakers in the National Assembly has jointly condemned the administration of President Bola Tinubu, accusing the government of failing to arrest the country’s slide into severe economic distress and widespread insecurity.
​Addressing journalists at a press conference on Thursday, spokespersons for the opposition expressed deep concern over the relentless wave of kidnappings, banditry, and economic inflation that has left millions of Nigerians struggling to survive.
​The lawmakers argued that despite various government promises and policy adjustments, the security situation across the country has noticeably deteriorated. They pointed to recent surges in attacks on rural communities and highway abductions as evidence of a failing security architecture.
​”Nigerians are living in a state of perpetual fear,” said Representative Bamidele Chinda, speaking on behalf of the coalition. “You cannot travel by road, you cannot farm in peace, and now, people are not even safe in their own homes. The current strategy is clearly not working.”
​On the economic front, the opposition criticized the administration’s handling of the post-subsidy removal era. They highlighted that skyrocketing food prices, the continuous fall of the Naira, and a rising cost of living have pushed the middle class into poverty.
​The coalition demanded immediate action from the executive arm, outlining several key expectations on Overhaul of Security Leadership, Targeted Economic Relief and Legislative Oversight An upcoming push for mandatory briefing sessions where the executive must present measurable outcomes on national security.
​The Presidency has yet to issue an official response to the lawmakers’ joint statement, though administration officials have previously urged Nigerians to remain patient as long-term reforms begin to take root.
