Gov. Hyacinth Alia of Benue has inaugurated a 12-member taskforce to facilitate the smooth take-off of the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology (UAST), Ihugh, Vandeikya Local Government Area.

Speaking during the inauguration in Makurdi on Wednesday, Alia described the institution as a strategic investment in the future of the state.

He said the university would serve as a centre of excellence in agriculture, science, technology, and enterprise development.

He said the institution was designed to empower youths through education, innovation, research, and entrepreneurship, equipping students with practical skills needed to drive economic growth.

According to him, the university aligns with his administration’s vision of building a knowledge-driven economy capable of transforming ideas into opportunities for sustainable development.

“The university is more than a physical institution. It is a strategic investment in the future of Benue and in the dreams of our young people.

“We are building a solution-driven institution that will produce graduates who will create jobs, establish businesses, and contribute meaningfully to the economy,” he said.

Alia noted that the institution would play a pivotal role in strengthening Benue’s position as the nation’s food basket through cutting-edge research and modern farming practices.

He charged the taskforce to provide strategic direction for the successful establishment of the university by putting in place necessary structures and resources for its take-off.

The taskforce is chaired by Prof. Leonard Shirgba, while Dr Johnson Echor, Registrar of the university, will serve as Secretary.

Alia wished members of the committee wisdom, success, and divine guidance in the discharge of their responsibilities.
