As the world marks Achebe Day on June 17, we join millions of admirers in celebrating the life and enduring legacy of Chinua Achebe, one of Africa’s most influential literary figures and a global symbol of African storytelling.
The occasion was further highlighted by a tribute from his son, Chidi Achebe, who reflected on the publication of Things Fall Apart on June 17, 1958. He noted that the novel, now translated into nearly 70 languages and with more than 30 million copies sold worldwide, has become a global literary classic and compulsory reading in schools across the world. Expressing gratitude for his father’s life, work and readers, he described the achievement as a testament to the timeless relevance of Achebe’s writings.
Achebe Day itself carries a special significance. In 2020, the World Ebony Network declared June 17 as Achebe Day in recognition of the author’s immense contributions to literature, culture and social justice. The recognition gained further prominence in 2023 when Senator Albrooks issued a proclamation recognising June 17 as Achebe Day in Prince George’s County, Maryland, United States. The day celebrates ethnic equity and equality while encouraging people and communities to tell their own stories and preserve their cultural identities.
