The Ondo State Government has intensified efforts to safeguard educational institutions by inaugurating a steering committee for the implementation of the Safe Schools Programme, a strategic initiative aimed at protecting students, teachers and school infrastructure from security threats across the state.
The move comes amid growing concerns over attacks on schools, kidnappings of students and other security challenges affecting educational institutions in various parts of Nigeria. State authorities say the establishment of the committee demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring that schools remain safe environments for learning and development.
The committee was formally inaugurated on Tuesday in Akure by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, who explained that the body had been established to provide strategic leadership, strengthen collaboration among stakeholders and coordinate efforts aimed at enhancing security within schools across the state.
According to the commissioner, the committee will play a critical role in driving the implementation of the Federal Government’s Safe Schools Initiative, a nationwide programme designed to protect learners, educators and educational facilities from violence, criminal attacks, kidnappings and other threats capable of disrupting academic activities.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Ajibefun noted that the safety of schoolchildren remains a top priority for the Ondo State Government and that proactive measures were necessary to prevent potential security breaches within educational institutions.
He explained that the steering committee would be responsible for developing strategies, monitoring implementation processes and ensuring that all stakeholders work together to achieve the objectives of the programme.
“The committee was specifically created to carry out critical responsibilities, provide strategic direction and enhance coordination among stakeholders,” the commissioner stated.
He emphasized that securing schools requires a collective effort involving government agencies, security organisations, community leaders, parents and school administrators.
To ensure broad representation and effective collaboration, the committee comprises members drawn from key security and community institutions. These include representatives of the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Amotekun Corps, traditional rulers, religious leaders and representatives of Parents-Teachers Associations.
The inclusion of these diverse stakeholders, according to government officials, is intended to create a comprehensive framework capable of addressing various security concerns that may arise within the educational sector.
Ajibefun said the committee’s work would extend beyond responding to threats and would focus significantly on preventive measures designed to reduce vulnerabilities in schools.
He urged members of the committee to approach their assignment with dedication and a strong sense of responsibility, noting that the future of thousands of schoolchildren depends on the effectiveness of the structures being put in place.
Charging the committee members on their responsibilities, the commissioner said, “You are to support the implementation of the Safe Schools Programme and strengthen mechanisms to prevent security threats in the educational institutions of the state.”
He further stressed that the government expects the committee to develop practical solutions that will enhance surveillance, improve emergency preparedness and promote stronger cooperation between schools and security agencies.
