The trial of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, suffered a setback on Monday after the absence of two co-defendants forced the Federal High Court in Kaduna to adjourn proceedings. The case, which was brought before the court by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, involves allegations of abuse of office, financial impropriety, and fraud said to have occurred during El-Rufai’s administration as governor of Kaduna State.
Despite the adjournment, El-Rufai was present in court and arrived at approximately 9:30 a.m. He was accompanied by officials of the anti-graft agency, alongside operatives of the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force, as security was heightened around the court premises.
The proceedings were expected to continue with the hearing of matters relating to the charges filed against the former governor and his co-defendants. However, the absence of the two other defendants standing trial alongside El-Rufai made it impossible for the court to proceed as scheduled.
Following submissions by counsel and a review of the situation, the presiding judge, Justice Rilwanu Aikawa, adjourned the case until June 24, 2026, for continuation of hearing. The development means that substantive proceedings in the matter will have to wait until the next scheduled date when all parties are expected to be present before the court.
The prosecution, led by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, alleges that public funds were released for projects that were either not executed or were handled in a manner inconsistent with due process during El-Rufai’s tenure as governor.
According to the commission, investigations uncovered alleged irregularities in the management and disbursement of public resources, prompting the filing of charges against the former governor and others connected to the case. The allegations form part of a broader effort by anti-corruption agencies to scrutinise the use of public funds and ensure accountability in government spending.
However, El-Rufai has repeatedly rejected the accusations, maintaining that his administration operated within the bounds of the law and adhered to established procedures in the execution of projects and public programmes. The former governor has consistently argued that all decisions taken during his time in office were aimed at improving infrastructure, public services, and governance in Kaduna State.
He has also expressed confidence that the judicial process will ultimately vindicate him. Monday’s court session attracted considerable public interest, with legal practitioners, political observers, supporters, and journalists gathering at the Federal High Court to monitor developments in the high-profile case. Security personnel were visibly present around the court complex to maintain order and regulate access to the premises throughout the proceedings.
Legal analysts note that the adjournment underscores the importance of ensuring the attendance of all defendants in criminal proceedings, particularly in cases involving multiple accused persons. They explained that the absence of co-defendants can significantly affect the pace of a trial and lead to delays in the judicial process.
The case remains one of the most closely watched legal proceedings involving a former state governor, given El-Rufai’s prominent role in Nigerian politics and his influence within national affairs.
As the matter resumes on June 24, attention will focus on whether all defendants will appear before the court and whether the prosecution will begin presenting evidence to substantiate its allegations.
For now, the former governor remains steadfast in his defence, while the anti-corruption agency continues its efforts to secure a judicial determination on the allegations before the court.
The adjournment means that both the prosecution and defence teams will have additional time to prepare for the next phase of the trial, which is expected to provide further insight into the allegations and the evidence surrounding the case.
