The growing disillusionment and loss of faith in the electoral process among young Nigerians is emerging as a critical threat to the nation’s democracy.
​Blessing Oyefeso, the President of Nigeria Youths in Politics, sounded the alarm during a recent interview on ARISE News, as discussions and preparations begin to ramp up ahead of the 2027 general elections.
​Speaking on the current political climate, Oyefeso identified widespread voter apathy as one of the most significant obstacles to robust democratic participation in the country. He noted that a staggering number of young people who make up the largest demographic block in Nigeria, increasingly doubt that their votes have the power to influence political outcomes or bring about genuine governance reform.
​”The growing loss of faith in elections among young people is becoming a major threat to democracy.” said Blessing Oyefeso.
​Oyefeso emphasized that without deliberate efforts to restore trust in the electoral system, the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy remains vulnerable. He urged stakeholders, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and political organizations, to prioritize transparency and engagement to rebuild confidence among the youth before the 2027 polls.
​As the countdown to the next general elections begins, political analysts echo Oyefeso’s concerns, warning that a democracy which fails to engage its youth risks losing its legitimacy and long-term stability.
