Security measures have been significantly intensified around the Presidential Villa, access routes to Aso Rock, and the strategic Three-Arms Zone in the nation’s capital. ​The heavy deployment of combined security forces, which became highly visible on Friday, follows a wave of intelligence reports and public announcements detailing planned protests led by activist Omoyele Sowore and various civil society groups.
The demonstrators are mobilizing to voice grievances over a recent surge in high-profile abductions across the country. ​Motorists and commuters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) noticed a stark change in the security landscape early in the day, with fortified checkpoints and heavily armed personnel stationed at critical junctures, including The Three-Arms Zone, Housing the National Assembly, the Supreme Court, and the Presidential Villa, Asokoro Access Routes and Central Business District Arteries. ​
The tension stems from growing public frustration regarding national security. Activists, spearheaded by Sowore, have openly called for mass demonstrations to demand immediate government action and accountability following the latest string of high-profile kidnappings. ​”The citizens cannot be left at the mercy of criminals while the government remains insulated behind barricades,” Sowore stated in a recent social media rally call.
​While the Presidency has not issued an official statement regarding the specific deployments, security sources indicate that the measures are “purely preemptive” to prevent any breakdown of law and order or unauthorized breach of restricted government zones. ​
An anonymous senior security official noted that while peaceful protest is a constitutional right, the proximity of the planned demonstrations to vital national infrastructure necessitated a robust, preventative show of force.
