The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Dr. Wole Oluyede, has promised to grant full financial and administrative autonomy to the 16 local government areas of the state if elected into office.
Oluyede made this pledge during his statewide campaign tour ahead of the June 20, 2026, governorship election, addressing a crowd of supporters and community stakeholders.
According to Oluyede, the current system has stifled development at the grassroots level by starving local governments of their statutory allocations. He argued that the lack of independence has rendered local council chairmen ineffective and unable to address basic community needs like rural roads, primary healthcare, and local security.
”For too long, our local governments have been treated as mere extensions of the state government’s ministries. This stops under my administration,” Oluyede declared. “We will ensure that every kobo meant for the local governments goes directly to them so they can deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.”
The PDP candidate outlined a multi-sectoral approach to governance, emphasizing that local government autonomy is foundational to his agenda. He has promised to ensure federal allocations reach council accounts without state interference and prioritise the rehabilitation of farm-to-market roads to boost the local economy.
Oluyede urged the electorate to come out en masse on June 20 to vote for the PDP, promising transparency, accountability, and a departure from the status quo.
