The ancient city of Ibadan, capital of Oyo State, came alive on Thursday as thousands of supporters, party loyalists, political stakeholders, youth groups, and women associations trooped to the historic Mapo Hall for a high-profile Unity Mega Rally organised by the Peoples Democratic Party and the Allied Peoples’ Movement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The rally, described by party leaders as a strategic political realignment aimed at strengthening opposition collaboration and consolidating grassroots structures, followed the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two political parties earlier in the day.
The agreement was supervised by the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, alongside the National Chairman of the Allied Peoples’ Movement, Yusuf Dantalle, at the PDP South-West Secretariat, popularly known as Soji Adagunodo House, located on Old Ife Road in Ibadan.
The development instantly generated excitement across the state’s political landscape, with residents witnessing massive vehicular movement and party processions from various local government areas into the city centre.
By midday, all roads leading to Mapo Hall were heavily crowded as party faithful adorned in customised PDP and APM attires waved banners, danced to music, and chanted solidarity songs in support of the alliance. Security personnel were also deployed around strategic locations to maintain order as the crowd continued to swell.
The atmosphere at the rally venue reflected a carnival-like mood, with drummers, cultural troupes, and political support groups entertaining attendees while awaiting the arrival of top dignitaries.
As of press time, senior government officials, lawmakers, former political office holders, party executives, and influential stakeholders from both parties had already occupied the specially arranged seats inside the historic venue amid heightened political anticipation.
Several observers described the rally as one of the largest political gatherings witnessed in Ibadan in recent times, noting that the turnout signalled growing momentum toward coalition-building ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Speaking shortly after the signing ceremony, leaders of both parties reportedly emphasized the need for unity among progressive political forces committed to good governance, democratic stability, and people-oriented leadership.
Governor Seyi Makinde was said to have commended the leadership of the APM for embracing dialogue and cooperation, stressing that political collaboration remained essential in deepening democratic values and ensuring inclusive governance.
According to insiders within the PDP structure, the alliance is expected to strengthen political mobilisation efforts across the South-West and other parts of the country ahead of the 2027 elections.
Supporters at the rally expressed optimism that the partnership between the two parties would reshape political dynamics in the state and provide a stronger platform for grassroots participation.
Many attendees who travelled from different parts of the state said they were motivated by the call for unity and the need to sustain developmental strides already being witnessed in Oyo State.
Political analysts also believe the alliance could influence future alignments among opposition parties as consultations and coalition talks continue nationwide ahead of the next general elections.
The rally further underscored the growing significance of Ibadan as a major political hub in the South-West, especially with the increasing wave of strategic meetings, consultations, and inter-party negotiations taking place in the region.
With chants of solidarity echoing across Mapo Hill and supporters waving party flags under the bright afternoon sun, the Unity Mega Rally ended up serving not only as a show of political strength but also as a symbolic declaration of intent by both parties as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum across the country.
