Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has congratulated Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the election of renowned Nigerian jurist, Oluwafemi Elias, into the International Law Commission (ILC). Ibrahim described the development as a significant diplomatic and legal achievement for Nigeria, saying it reflected the country’s growing influence in international affairs and renewed participation in global governance.
Elias was elected during the 77th session of the International Law Commission held in Geneva to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Phoebe Okowa for the remainder of the tenure ending December 31, 2027. In a statement issued by the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations in New York, Ibrahim said the successful election demonstrated the confidence reposed in Nigeria by the international community.
