Governor Alex Otti has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across Abia State, declaring that no meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of fear and instability. The governor made the declaration on Wednesday while receiving members of the Alumni Association of the Seventh Regular Course of the Nigeria Naval College at the Government House in Umuahia.
The delegation was led by retired naval officer A.O. Bamidele, who paid a courtesy visit to the governor as part of the association’s engagements and outreach activities. Speaking during the meeting, Otti emphasized that security remains at the heart of his administration’s governance agenda, insisting that economic growth, infrastructure development and social progress can only flourish in a peaceful and secure environment.
“For us, security is a top priority. Without security, every other thing collapses,” the governor stated. He explained that his administration has continued to invest resources, intelligence and institutional support into strengthening security operations across the state in order to guarantee the safety of residents, businesses and investors. According to Otti, insecurity not only threatens lives and property but also undermines public confidence, discourages investment and weakens the foundation for sustainable governance.
The governor noted that one of the first responsibilities of government is the protection of lives and property, stressing that every other policy objective becomes difficult to achieve once citizens feel unsafe. Since assuming office, Otti said his administration has adopted proactive measures aimed at restoring confidence in public safety, including closer collaboration with security agencies, community leaders and local vigilante structures.
He explained that Abia State is gradually regaining its reputation as a peaceful and economically vibrant destination due to deliberate interventions in the security sector. The governor also observed that improved security has contributed significantly to the growing confidence among investors and businesses seeking opportunities in the state. According to him, his government understands the direct relationship between security and economic prosperity, particularly at a time when subnational governments are competing to attract private sector investments.
Otti stressed that no investor would commit resources to an environment plagued by violence, kidnapping or criminal uncertainty. He further assured residents that his administration would not relent in its efforts to ensure that criminal elements have no space to operate within the state. While acknowledging the support of security agencies, the governor commended officers and men of the armed forces, police and other security institutions for their sacrifices in protecting the country.
He particularly praised the contributions of retired military personnel and alumni associations that continue to support national development through mentorship, advocacy and public engagement. Addressing the visiting delegation, Otti said the experience and discipline acquired during military service remain valuable assets in nation-building. He noted that retired officers possess strategic insights that can help governments strengthen public institutions, improve security coordination and promote patriotism among younger generations.
The governor added that leadership, discipline and commitment to service are critical values needed to reposition Nigeria and its institutions for future challenges. Earlier, the leader of the delegation, A.O. Bamidele, commended Otti for what he described as visible improvements in governance and infrastructure within Abia State. He praised the governor’s commitment to restoring order and improving public confidence in the state, noting that security remains central to national stability and development.
Bamidele said the association was proud to identify with initiatives aimed at promoting peace, good governance and institutional reforms. He also expressed appreciation to the governor for receiving the delegation and for his continued support for security agencies operating within the state. Observers at the meeting noted that Otti’s remarks reflect growing concerns among state governments over the security situation across various parts of the country.
In recent years, many governors have increasingly prioritized security collaboration with federal agencies while also investing in local intelligence gathering and community-based approaches to crime prevention.
