The Nigeria Democratic Congress on Friday launched its maiden congresses across the country, setting in motion a defining phase in its journey toward institutional stability and national relevance. The exercise, which marks the party’s first large-scale internal democratic process, is widely seen as a crucial test of its organisational strength ahead of its inaugural national convention scheduled for May 9, 2026, in Abuja.
In a statement issued by the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, the NDC confirmed that activities had commenced simultaneously in various states, with ward and polling unit congresses taking place on May 1 and 2. These grassroots-level exercises are expected to produce delegates and representatives who will participate in subsequent stages of the party’s leadership selection process.
Abdulsalam described the development as a “landmark moment” for the NDC, noting that the congresses were designed to deepen democratic values within the party while fostering inclusiveness among its members nationwide. According to him, the next phase, local government congresses, will hold on May 4, further consolidating the structure required to usher in a fully constituted national leadership.

“On the back of the ongoing congresses, the NDC is also set for its maiden national party convention, which is scheduled to hold in Abuja on the 9th of May, 2026,” the statement read. “Preparations for the convention have been concluded by the planning committee. All is now set for the big event.”
The convention is expected to attract accredited delegates from across the federation, as well as officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission, who will monitor proceedings in accordance with the Electoral Act. Their presence is intended to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and reinforce public confidence in the party’s processes.
