As the rainy season intensifies across Ogun State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a strong advisory to motorists, warning that a combination of pothole-ridden roads and wet conditions could lead to a surge in avoidable accidents if caution is not exercised. The Ogun Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, delivered the message on Monday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota. His remarks come at a critical time when frequent rainfall has begun to expose and worsen road damage, creating hazardous driving conditions for commuters and transport operators alike.
Ogunjobi stressed that many road crashes recorded during the rainy season are not merely the result of poor infrastructure but are often compounded by driver behavior, particularly excessive speed and impatience. According to him, the presence of potholes on highways demands a higher level of alertness and discipline from motorists. “When roads are wet, they become slippery, and the margin for error is significantly reduced,” he explained. “Driving at high speed under such conditions makes it difficult to maintain control of the vehicle, especially when trying to navigate potholes.” Across major routes in the state, pools of water often conceal the true depth and severity of potholes, making them even more dangerous.
Unsuspecting drivers who fail to slow down risk sudden jolts, tire bursts, or loss of control, situations that can quickly escalate into serious accidents. To mitigate these risks, Ogunjobi advised motorists to adopt safer driving habits, beginning with a deliberate reduction in speed whenever they approach visibly damaged sections of the road. He also emphasized the importance of patience, noting that rushing through such areas can have far-reaching consequences not only for the driver but for other road users. One of the key recommendations highlighted by the FRSC commander is maintaining adequate following distance. He urged drivers to keep at least double or even triple the usual gap between their vehicle and the one ahead.
This precaution, he explained, provides additional time and space to react in case of sudden braking or unexpected obstacles. “Extra distance gives you a buffer,” Ogunjobi said. “If the vehicle in front hits a pothole or stops abruptly, you need enough time to respond safely, especially on a wet surface where braking takes longer.” The advisory also serves as a broader reminder of the seasonal challenges that come with Nigeria’s rainy months.
Reduced visibility, flooded roads, and mechanical issues caused by water exposure all contribute to increased risks on the highways.
