The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, officially commended the peaceful conduct of the presidential elections in Benin held on April 12.
​The AU’s endorsement is particularly noteworthy given the high stakes following a period of political tension, including an attempted military coup in December 2025.
​The elections were seen as a major test for Benin’s democratic institutions after President Patrice Talon reached his constitutional two-term limit and opted to step down. Romuald Wadagni (the former Finance Minister) was declared the winner by the National Electoral Commission on April 13, 2026.
The African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) was led by Sylvestre Ntibantunganya, the former President of Burundi. The AU Chairperson highlighted that the peaceful transition and electoral victory serve as a foundation for sustainable peace and development in the region.
​Beyond the elections in Benin, the AU has been focusing on several strategic pillars under the new leadership of President Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi (elected AU Chairperson for 2026).
The AU’s quick response to the Benin elections reflects a renewed commitment to the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, especially in a region that has seen a recent uptick in military interventions.
