The Edo State House of Assembly on Thursday criticized the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for suspending the Edo State Security Network (ESSN). The Majority Leader of the House, Charity Aiguobarueghian, stated that the security network was established in accordance with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Speaking to reporters in Benin, Aiguobarueghian affirmed that the security network would continue to safeguard the citizens, regardless of the IG’s suspension order.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the Inspector-General had, on Wednesday, directed the suspension of the security network’s activities until further notice, cautioning that the responsibility for securing the upcoming governorship election lay with the police.
Aiguobarueghian argued that only a court of law could suspend, ban, or nullify the Edo State Security Network. He emphasized the critical role the ESSN plays in ensuring security, particularly in rural areas, and recalled the network’s vital assistance during the ENDSARS protest in the state.
He further noted that the Edo State House of Assembly, in accordance with its powers under Section 4 of the Constitution, has the authority to legislate on maintaining peace and order in the state. “Edo State is one of 23 states out of 36 that have an internal community policing network designed to ensure security and order,” he said. He stressed that these powers are enshrined in the constitution and can only be challenged in court.
Aiguobarueghian clarified that members of the ESSN would not be involved in the governorship election beyond voting, just like any other citizen.
