The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared that Nigeria remains stable, resilient, and firmly on the path to recovery and economic growth, dismissing claims that the nation is nearing a crisis point.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this assertion on Thursday while addressing stakeholders at the 81st General Assembly and 23rd Annual General Meeting of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), held at the Hawthorn Hotel and Suites in Abuja.
In his remarks, Idris strongly countered narratives suggesting that Nigeria is on the verge of collapse, insisting that such views are not only misleading but also fail to acknowledge the ongoing efforts by the government to address pressing national challenges.
“I want to unequivocally refute the insinuation that Nigeria is on the brink. On the contrary, we are daily exhibiting resilience and tackling our security and economic challenges more decisively,” the minister stated.
He emphasised that the government has continued to implement reforms and interventions aimed at stabilising the economy, improving security, and restoring public confidence. According to him, while challenges persist, the country is making measurable progress across key sectors.
Idris highlighted the importance of responsible journalism and the role of the media in shaping public perception, urging broadcasters to report accurately and avoid sensationalism that could undermine national unity or erode confidence in the country’s institutions.
He noted that platforms such as BON play a critical role in disseminating information to millions of Nigerians and therefore must uphold the highest standards of professionalism and patriotism.
“Your responsibility goes beyond reporting events; it includes promoting national cohesion and providing context that helps citizens understand the efforts being made to move the country forward,” he told participants at the gathering.
The minister also pointed to ongoing security operations and economic policies as evidence of the government’s commitment to addressing the nation’s challenges. He said authorities are intensifying efforts to combat insecurity while pursuing economic reforms designed to boost productivity, attract investment, and create jobs.
Participants at the event, which brought together media executives, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, discussed the evolving role of broadcasting in a rapidly changing information landscape, as well as strategies for strengthening the sector.
