The Abia State Government has reacted to reports surrounding the arrest of a personnel of the Nigerian Army, Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon, who was recently received by Governor Alex Otti and promised medical assistance on compassionate grounds.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, the government said its attention had been drawn to the development and clarified the circumstances surrounding the support earlier promised to the soldier. According to the statement, information made available by military authorities indicated that the soldier was arrested in connection with an alleged fraud said to have been committed some time ago.

The Abia State Government explained that the soldier’s visit to the governor was facilitated by a non-governmental organisation that sought medical assistance for him due to an injury he sustained while serving in the line of duty. The government noted that although the soldier had previously served in Abia State, the injury for which he required medical attention occurred after he had left the state.

Ekeoma stressed that Governor Otti’s decision to offer assistance was purely based on compassion and had no connection with any legal or disciplinary issues involving the soldier. He explained that the governor, known for his humanitarian approach to governance, had consistently extended assistance to citizens and security personnel facing medical or personal challenges, regardless of their background or affiliation.

The statement further emphasised that the support promised to the soldier was in line with the administration’s broader commitment to social welfare and humanitarian services. According to the government, several individuals, including security agents who suffered injuries or misfortune while carrying out their duties, had benefited from similar gestures by the state government.

“The governor’s gesture was purely humanitarian,” the statement noted, adding that the government acted in good faith based on the information presented at the time the soldier was brought for assistance. It added that the administration remains committed to supporting security personnel who risk their lives to protect citizens, particularly when they face health challenges arising from their service.

The Abia Government also made it clear that the arrest of the soldier by the Nigerian Army was an internal military matter and that the state government would not interfere in the investigation process. However, it reiterated that its promise of medical assistance was not influenced by any ulterior motive but was part of its responsibility to support those in need.

Observers say the incident has generated public discussion, particularly on the relationship between humanitarian assistance and the legal accountability of beneficiaries. Some analysts argue that the situation highlights the importance of due diligence, while others maintain that humanitarian gestures should not be politicised or misinterpreted.

Despite the controversy surrounding the arrest, the Abia State Government maintained that its commitment to humanitarian services remains unchanged. The administration reaffirmed that it would continue to assist citizens and security personnel in need of medical support, especially those who sustained injuries while serving the nation.

The government concluded by urging the public to avoid speculation and allow the appropriate authorities to carry out their investigations, while also recognising that acts of compassion should not be discouraged by circumstances that may arise after such assistance has been offered.

As the situation unfolds, the case of Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon has drawn attention not only to the circumstances of his arrest but also to broader issues concerning welfare for injured security personnel, public accountability, and the role of government in providing humanitarian support to those who have served the country.
