The Zamfara State Government has approved the early payment of March salaries and pensions to civil servants and retirees in the state as part of efforts to support them ahead of the upcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
The decision, announced on Monday, is aimed at easing financial pressure on workers and pensioners while allowing them to make adequate preparations for the Sallah festivities, which mark the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, Muhammad Dantawasa. According to him, the government had concluded all necessary arrangements to ensure that the payments reach beneficiaries promptly.
“Necessary arrangements have been concluded to ensure the prompt payment of salaries and pensions to all beneficiaries across the state,” the statement said.
The move is expected to benefit thousands of workers and retirees across the state, many of whom depend on their monthly earnings to meet household needs and celebrate important religious occasions with their families.
Governor Dauda Lawal, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers and pensioners, said the early disbursement of salaries reflects the government’s determination to support citizens during significant periods such as religious festivities.
According to the governor, his administration recognises the sacrifices made by civil servants in maintaining the functioning of government institutions and believes that prioritising their welfare is essential for effective public service delivery.
He assured that the government would continue to implement policies and programmes designed to improve the living conditions of workers and retirees in the state.
“His government will continue to prioritise policies that improve the well-being of workers and retirees,” the statement added.
Observers say the early salary payment is also intended to stimulate economic activity across local communities, as workers are likely to spend on food, clothing, transportation and other essentials in preparation for the celebration.
Markets across the state traditionally experience increased commercial activities in the days leading up to Eid-el-Fitr, as families purchase items for the festival, including food ingredients, clothing and gifts.
By ensuring that workers and pensioners receive their entitlements before the holiday, the government hopes to ease financial constraints while encouraging broader participation in the festive period.
Eid-el-Fitr is one of the most important religious celebrations for Muslims around the world. It marks the end of the Ramadan fast and is typically observed with prayers, family gatherings, charitable giving and communal meals.
