The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has called on members nationwide to disregard information suggesting that the party is preparing to hold national congresses.
In a statement issued on behalf of the NWC, Turaki said the party was not conducting any congress in any part of the country and urged members and the general public to treat such reports as false.
“Our members and the general public are hereby notified that our party is not conducting congresses in any part of the country,” he stated.
The clarification follows a separate announcement by the Wike/Anyanwu faction of the party, led by National Caretaker Committee (NCC) Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, which had urged members to begin preparations for congresses.
The development underscores the deepening leadership crisis rocking the opposition party, with both factions still locked in court battles over control of its structures.
Turaki, who is buoyed by the recent judgment of the Ibadan High Court affirming last year’s national convention that produced him as national chairman, described the purported congress plans as illegal and misleading.
According to him, any attempt to organise congresses outside the authority of the duly recognised NWC would amount to a violation of the party’s constitution and established procedures.
He warned party members against participating in any such exercise, insisting that only directives issued by the recognised leadership of the party should be obeyed.
The PDP has been embroiled in a protracted leadership tussle, with rival factions laying claim to legitimacy and control of party machinery. Political observers say the latest dispute over congresses could further complicate reconciliation efforts ahead of future elections.
As the legal battle continues, party faithful await a definitive resolution from the courts to determine the authentic leadership structure and restore stability within the once-dominant political platform.
