Professor Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has described the stabilisation of the naira against the dollar as a significant milestone of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Speaking with journalists on Saturday at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, she said exchange rate predictability is critical for business planning, trade operations and overall economic performance.
According to her, the relative stability of the naira has helped reduce the uncertainty that previously characterised the foreign exchange market, enabling businesses to forecast costs and revenues more accurately. “Exchange rate predictability is essential for imports, exports and long-term investment decisions,” she said. “When businesses can anticipate currency movements with greater confidence, it reduces risks and improves planning across sectors.”
Obasanjo noted that currency volatility often disrupts supply chains and pricing structures, adding that sustained stability would enhance investor confidence and support broader economic reforms. She also commended the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project, describing it as a transformative initiative with the potential to improve connectivity and strengthen regional trade. According to her, the coastal highway could ease congestion along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway corridor in Ogun State, enhance access to Eastern states and reinforce trade linkages between the Lagos and Calabar ports.
Obasanjo maintained that improved economic coordination, increased international engagement and strengthened security collaboration under the current administration are contributing to a more stable environment for growth. She emphasised that while challenges remain, sustained policy consistency and infrastructure investment would be key to consolidating recent gains and driving inclusive economic development across the country.
