The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully commissioned a new 300MVA power transformer at its 330/132/33kV Egbin Transmission Substation in Lagos State, strengthening electricity supply to parts of the state.
The project, completed on February 22, 2025, increases the substation’s total capacity from 300MVA to 450MVA, significantly improving the availability of bulk electricity to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC).
The Egbin Transmission Substation is one of the critical nodes in the national transmission network, serving IKEDC’s coverage areas across Lagos and adjoining communities. The facility plays a pivotal role in transmitting power to a region with a dense population and a rapidly expanding commercial and industrial base.
In a statement shared on TCN’s official X handle on Monday, the General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said the upgrade would have immediate impact on electricity consumers.
“This upgrade will directly benefit customers in Ikorodu, Shagamu, Ijede, and surrounding areas. It will enhance the reliability of power supply, support economic growth, and contribute to a more stable grid,” she stated.
Also speaking on the completion of the project, the General Manager of Transmission, Lagos Region, Adeshina Adeonipekun, disclosed that the installation was executed internally by TCN engineers within six weeks.
“The project was completed in-house by TCN engineers in just six weeks. This achievement reflects our commitment to strengthening the national grid and ensuring reliable power delivery for all Nigerians,” Adeonipekun said.
The commissioning of the additional transformer is expected to reduce load constraints, improve voltage stability, and enhance overall grid performance within Lagos and its environs, further reinforcing efforts to meet the growing electricity demand in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
