Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai had been in EFCC custody since Monday, February 16, facing questioning over allegations of financial impropriety and the diversion of state funds (estimated at N423 billion) during his tenure. He was granted administrative bail around 8:00 PM on Wednesday.

As he was leaving the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, he was immediately picked up by armed operatives. While initial reports suggested that the DSS (or SSS) made the arrest, the ICPC later confirmed that he is currently in their custody.

Even though he is currently with the ICPC, the DSS has already filed a three-count cybercrime charge against him in the Federal High Court. This is linked to his recent Arise TV interview where he claimed to have heard a “wiretapped” conversation of the National Security Adviser.

Charging him with unlawful interception of communications (wiretapping the NSA), Investigating a separate case involving a N1.3 billion failed light rail project in Kaduna.

The DSS has specifically accused him of using “technical equipment” that compromised national security, which adds a serious criminal layer to the existing corruption probes.
