Former Governors Ahmed Makarfi of Kaduna State and Sule Lamido of Jigawa State have called for reconciliation and renewed unity within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as part of efforts to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general election. The two elder statesmen met behind closed doors on Tuesday at Makarfi’s residence in Kaduna, where they held extensive discussions on the state of the party and the need to overcome internal divisions.
After the meeting, they briefed journalists, describing their engagement as one of several ongoing consultations aimed at strengthening the PDP. Makarfi, a former National Caretaker Chairman and Secretary of the PDP Board of Trustees, said the meeting was in line with years of continuous dialogue among party leaders to ensure cohesion and stability. He noted that the present challenges facing the PDP require deep reflection and a collective commitment to forgiveness and unity.
According to him, the party is at a critical point where members must rise above personal grievances and work together in the overall interest of the PDP and the country. “This is not the time to be angry. It is time to put on our thinking caps and ensure that we come out of the situation the party is in,” Makarfi said. He stressed that reconciliation and inclusiveness remain key to rebuilding trust within the party and positioning it as a strong and credible alternative ahead of future elections.
Lamido, a former governor of Jigawa State and ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs, also emphasized the importance of unity, noting that the PDP has a long history of resolving internal disagreements through dialogue. He expressed optimism that with sincere engagement among leaders and stakeholders, the party would emerge stronger. The meeting between the two senior PDP figures is seen as part of broader efforts by party elders to heal rifts, restore confidence, and galvanize members nationwide as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 polls.
