The usually calm campus of the Tai Solarin Federal University of Education (TASFUED), Ijagun, came alive with celebration as history unfolded during the institution’s 17th convocation ceremony.
Amid academic gowns, applause and reflections on nearly two decades of teacher education, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, announced the establishment of a ₦50 million endowment fund for the university — a gesture that underscored the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to education.
The endowment was unveiled at a moment of transition for the institution, which recently moved from the control of the Ogun State Government to the Federal Government. The transfer, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in March last year, officially marked TASFUED’s new status as a federal university.
Speaking during the ceremony, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, formally handed over the institution to the Federal Government, describing the development as a major milestone in the history of education in the state and the country at large. He noted that the transition would open new opportunities for funding, infrastructure development and academic growth.
Beyond the events in Ogun State, the First Lady extended her support to students in neighbouring Osun State. In a separate gesture aimed at easing campus transportation challenges, she donated 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and 30 tricycles to students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
The intervention, according to observers, aligns with the administration’s push for cleaner energy solutions while addressing students’ welfare and mobility concerns.
As celebrations drew to a close at TASFUED, the mood on campus reflected more than convocation joy — it marked the beginning of a new chapter shaped by federal backing, strategic investment, and renewed hope for teacher education in Nigeria.
