The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the Kwara State College of Education, Oro, following worsening security challenges in the area.
The directive was contained in an internal memo dated January 20, 2026, issued by the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Technology.
The memo, signed by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, instructed the management of the institution to suspend all academic activities with immediate effect.
According to the document, the decision was taken in line with the directive of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who approved the closure as part of urgent measures to safeguard lives and property.
The government noted that the action followed increasing security threats around the college and its host community, raising concerns for the safety of students, staff and residents.
The memo further explained that the closure of the College of Education, Oro, was in compliance with a broader state directive ordering the shutdown of all schools within the affected local government area until the security situation improves.
While no timeline was given for the reopening of the institution, the government assured that the decision was a temporary measure aimed at preventing further risks and allowing security agencies to stabilise the area.
Students and staff have been advised to comply fully with the directive and await further instructions from the state government.
