The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday arraigned a businessman, Wilson Opuwei, before Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, over an alleged fraud involving the sum of $550,000.

Opuwei was docked alongside his company, Dateline Energy Services Limited, on a four-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretences and stealing.

According to the anti-graft agency, the defendants allegedly defrauded their victim under the guise of executing a business transaction, an act the EFCC said contravened relevant provisions of the law.

When the charges were read to them, Opuwei and the company pleaded not guilty.

Following their plea, the prosecution urged the court to remand the defendants pending trial, while defence counsel asked for bail on liberal terms.

Justice Abike-Fadipe subsequently adjourned the matter to a later date for the hearing of the bail application and commencement of trial.
