A fresh wave of controversy has emerged in Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State following claims surrounding the appointment of a vice chairman linked to political succession arrangements involving the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.
The allegations were raised in a detailed Facebook post by Sheriffdeen Ojon Omo Eko, who questioned the political process that led to the emergence of the current Agege local government leadership.
According to the post, during the last local government elections in Lagos State, Mr. Tunde Azeez, a former chairman of Agege Local Government, was reportedly selected as chairman despite publicly known health challenges. The arrangement, the post alleged, was that Azeez would serve temporarily before resigning on health grounds, paving the way for succession within the same political circle.
Mr. Azeez later resigned, citing health reasons. Subsequently, Hon. Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, son of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, emerged as chairman of the local government.
The controversy deepened following claims that the son of the former chairman, Tunde Azeez, was quietly appointed as vice chairman, allegedly without broad consultation or public announcement. The post further alleged that the appointment was deliberately kept low-key to avoid public opposition.
Sheriffdeen Ojon Omo Eko also raised concerns about the background and local familiarity of the vice chairman, claiming he had limited ties to Agege and lacked sufficient knowledge of the community. He further questioned the qualifications of the former chairman, making allegations regarding his educational credentials and past association with political activities. These claims, however, remain unverified.
The Facebook post accused Speaker Obasa of wielding excessive influence over political structures in Agege and parts of Alimosho, describing what the writer termed as a pattern of unilateral decision-making in local governance. It also called on political leaders at the national and state levels to reassess internal party processes to promote transparency and inclusiveness.
The post concluded with a call for increased political participation and accountability ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging residents to support candidates they believe better represent community interests.
As of the time of filing this report, no official response has been issued by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, the Agege Local Government, or the individuals mentioned regarding the allegations.
