The Lagos State Government on Tuesday spoke in a subdued but firm tone as it reacted to the death of Nkanu, son of renowned Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, describing the loss as both painful and irreparable.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Health, the state expressed deep sympathy with Adichie and her family following the tragic incident, which reportedly occurred after a medical emergency at a private healthcare facility in Lagos on January 6.
The government noted that the death of a child represents one of life’s most devastating experiences and acknowledged the weight of grief such a loss brings. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, said the state shares in the family’s sorrow and assured residents that the government remains committed to safeguarding lives across all levels of healthcare delivery.
She stressed that the tragedy has further strengthened the state’s resolve to intensify oversight and regulation of medical practice, particularly in private health facilities. According to Ogunyemi, Lagos is taking steps to reinforce standards, accountability, and patient safety in order to prevent similar incidents in the future.
She added that protecting the health, safety, and rights of residents remains a core responsibility of the government.
