The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has criticised the state government over what it described as the absence of an official response following an explosion in Offa, the headquarters of Offa Local Government Area, which has left residents anxious and seeking clarity on the incident.
The party’s position followed earlier reports on Friday of the explosion, which reportedly occurred in parts of the town, triggering fear and speculation among residents.
According to the PDP, the failure of the state government and relevant security agencies to promptly brief the public has deepened uncertainty and panic in the area.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Kwara State PDP said timely and transparent communication was critical in moments of public emergency, stressing that silence from authorities could fuel rumours and undermine public confidence.
The party called on the state government to immediately provide clear and factual information on the cause of the explosion, the extent of damage, and whether there were casualties, while also outlining steps being taken to ensure the safety of residents.
The PDP further urged the government to strengthen its emergency response and crisis communication mechanisms to reassure the people of Offa and the wider Kwara community.
It emphasised that residents deserved accurate and timely updates, noting that effective leadership required proactive engagement, especially during incidents that threaten public safety and peace.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Government had yet to issue an official statement on the explosion.
