Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, former Kaduna State Governor, on Monday denied a statement credited to him that the choice of Nigerian President should be restricted to the South East in 2027, dismissing it as “fake news.”
El-Rufai, using his verified Facebook page, dismissed the report, stressing that he neither made the statement in any speech, interview, or social media post, adding that other people’s opinions must not be attributed to him.
“These caveats are crucial as we confront both irresponsible politicking and the deliberate misuse of social media for spreading fake news.
“The wilful attribution to me of claims I did not make by a fake news platform is no excuse to treat such platforms with any seriousness,” he said, adding that must uphold the responsibility of accuracy in reporting.
He emphasised the importance of verifying information before dissemination, particularly in an era marked by misinformation and deliberate falsehoods.
