In a major global development, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, is reportedly preparing to establish a WTO sub-office in Aba, Abia State — marking the first-ever WTO presence in Africa and only the second worldwide.
According to early statements, Okonjo-Iweala described the decision as “a strategic investment in Africa’s industrial potential”, noting that “Aba has shown remarkable resilience and innovation, and the world is beginning to notice.”
Local observers say this single project could transform Aba into a fully recognised international commercial hub, attracting global investors, manufacturers and trade partners.
A senior Abia State official added: “This will change everything for Aba. The city is stepping onto the world stage.”
