Customs officers at the Tin Can Island Port Command have seized two 40-foot containers loaded with Delta-8 cannabis-infused cookies, gummies, and high-grade marijuana hidden inside imported vehicles brought in from Canada.
The illicit consignment, weighing 1,201.83 kilograms with an estimated street value of ₦3.67 billion, was uncovered during a series of routine physical inspections at the port terminal.
The seizures occurred on September 2, 2026, and September 16, 2026, following intelligence reports that prompted officers to conduct thorough searches on incoming shipments.
Customs inspectors discovered 890 packages of Delta-8 cannabis cookies and gummies weighing 598.08 kilograms, alongside 1,207 packages of high-grade imported cannabis strain weighing 603.75 kilograms.
The narcotics were stuffed inside four imported used vehicles, two Toyota Sienna minivans and two Toyota Corolla sedans, as well as inside crates containing used automotive engine parts.
Displaying the seized goods to reporters at the command headquarters, Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Anani, warned of the severe public health hazard posed by disguised drug products entering local markets.
”These cookies and gummies present an extraordinary danger because unsuspecting citizens, including children, can easily consume them without realizing they contain potent narcotics,” Anani said.
“They are specifically designed to target young people and patrons of night clubs. Our command will remain aggressive in shutting down these supply chains before they hit Nigerian streets.”
The intercepted narcotics, along with suspects arrested in connection with the shipments, have been transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.
