The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, has emphasized that an inaugural lecture is a hallmark of a professor’s academic achievement.
Prof. Arinze-Umobi made this remark at the 116th Inaugural Lecture of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, delivered by Rev. Fr. Prof. Ikenga Kenneth Emeka Oraegbunam, at Zephaniah Mmadubuko Building, UNIZIK, Awka.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that a professor is expected to share groundbreaking research with the world through an inaugural lecture, adding that the topic chosen by the 116th Inaugural Lecturer, “The ‘Justice’ of Judicial Injustice in Nigeria: Any Way Out of the Paradox?”, sheds light on societal injustices.
In his lecture, Prof. Oraegbunam defined justice as fairness and equality in law application and individual treatment. He stressed that judicial injustice occurs when corruption, bias, or procedural flaws compromise the legal system, leading to unfair outcomes.
Prof. Oraegbunam highlighted consequences of judicial injustice, including erosion of public trust, hindered economic growth, social inequality, miscarriage of justice, and social unrest.
He cited cases of injustices in Nigeria, emphasizing that judicial activism, access to justice initiatives, and anti-corruption measures among others can address these judicial injustice.
In a goodwill message, the Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Barr. Monsur Olugbenga Kukoyi described the lecture as unique and thought-provoking.
The event drew esteemed personalities, including the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev Paulinus Ezeokafor; the Vice-Chancellors of Paul University Awka, Rev. Prof. Obiora Nwosu; and that of Shanahan University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Josephat Oguejiofor; the university Council members, the clergy, legal luminaries, and traditional leaders, among others.
Highlight of the event was the decoration of Prof. Oraegbunam as the 116th Inaugural Lecturer, and a colorful academic procession.
