The United Nations has commended Nigeria for taking significant steps toward implementing the UN Secretary-General’s Action Agenda on Internal Displacement, describing the country’s efforts as a model of commitment to protecting and supporting displaced persons.
The Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Mr Stéphane Dujarric, disclosed this during a press briefing at the UN headquarters while giving an update on the UN high-level mission to Nigeria.
According to Dujarric, Nigeria has “risen to the challenge” by taking concrete actions to address the complex humanitarian and developmental issues surrounding internal displacement, particularly in regions affected by conflict, flooding, and other crises.
“The UN commends Nigeria for rising to the challenge and demonstrating leadership in realising the Secretary-General’s Action Agenda on internal displacement. The government’s efforts show a clear commitment to durable solutions for displaced communities,” Dujarric said.
He explained that the high-level mission, led by senior UN officials, engaged with federal and state authorities, humanitarian partners, and displaced persons to assess progress and identify areas requiring additional support.
Dujarric noted that the Nigerian government’s initiatives — including the establishment of the Presidential Committee on the National Framework for Durable Solutions for Internal Displacement — align with the Action Agenda’s goal of moving beyond emergency response to long-term recovery, reintegration, and resilience building.
He emphasized that the UN remains committed to working with Nigeria to strengthen institutional capacity, promote peace and security, and ensure displaced persons can rebuild their lives with dignity.
The UN Action Agenda on Internal Displacement, launched in June 2022 by Secretary-General António Guterres, aims to galvanize global action to prevent displacement, protect affected populations, and secure lasting solutions for the world’s more than 70 million internally displaced people.
Nigeria, one of the first countries to adopt the framework nationally, has been at the forefront of developing policies to tackle internal displacement driven by insurgency, communal violence, and climate-related disasters, especially in the North-East and Middle Belt regions.
The UN spokesperson reaffirmed that continued collaboration between Nigeria, development partners, and humanitarian agencies will be critical to achieving durable peace and stability for displaced populations across the country.
