The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced plans to enhance inclusivity and diversity within its structure by amending its constitution to give greater representation to women, youths, and persons with disabilities.
The ruling party said the proposed amendment is aimed at ensuring that marginalized groups within its ranks are not only seen but also heard and actively involved in the decision-making processes at all levels of the party’s hierarchy.
Speaking on the development on Monday in Abuja, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s broader commitment to inclusive governance and national development.
According to him, the planned constitutional review will institutionalize equal opportunities and guarantee fair representation in party leadership, delegate composition, and elective contests.
The APC is a progressive party, and progressivism demands inclusion. This review process will strengthen our internal democracy and ensure that women, youths, and persons with disabilities have a permanent and meaningful place in our leadership and decision-making structures,” Morka stated.
He noted that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has already set up a technical committee to review relevant sections of the party’s constitution, especially those dealing with membership, internal elections, and appointments.
Party insiders revealed that the proposed changes may include reserved elective and appointive positions for women and youth, as well as the establishment of a standing committee on disability inclusion within the party’s organs.
Grassroots and youth leaders within the APC have lauded the initiative, describing it as a long-awaited step toward genuine inclusivity in Nigeria’s political system.
The APC Women Leader, Dr. Mary Alile, said the move would further empower women to play more active roles in politics beyond campaign seasons.
This is not just about token representation; it’s about creating a structure where women, young people, and persons with disabilities can contribute meaningfully to shaping the direction of our party and our country,” she said.
The constitutional amendment process, once finalized, is expected to be tabled before the next National Convention of the APC for ratification by delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Political observers have described the initiative as a strategic move by the ruling party to consolidate its internal democracy and appeal to a broader base of Nigerians ahead of future elections.
