Youth leaders drawn from 13 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have endorsed the current President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Amb. Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, for another term in office.
At a consultative meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, the leaders commended Sukubo for what they described as his “unprecedented leadership strides” in uniting the youth constituency and pushing for policies that advance young people’s welfare.
In a communique issued at the end of the meeting, the youth leaders praised Sukubo for strengthening the Council’s structures across the states, building international partnerships, and consistently engaging government at all levels on youth empowerment.
“Ambassador Sukubo has proven to be a visionary leader with a track record of integrity, inclusiveness, and passion for youth development,” the communique read. “We believe his re-election will consolidate the gains already made under his stewardship.”
The group urged delegates ahead of the Council’s next elective congress to “place merit above sentiment” and ensure that the Council remains in the hands of competent leadership.
They also pledged to mobilise support across the country to ensure Sukubo secures another mandate.
Sukubo, who has led the NYCN since 2018, is widely regarded as one of the longest-serving leaders of the body, navigating it through crises and factional disputes. His supporters argue that his continuity would guarantee stability, while critics within the youth movement have called for fresh leadership.
With the endorsement, the re-election bid of Sukubo is expected to gain momentum, as more blocs within the NYCN prepare to take positions ahead of the upcoming congress.
