Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Sunday embarked on a political shuttle across the Southwest, meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Oyo State Governor, Rashidi Ladoja.
Obi, who arrived Abeokuta in the morning, held a closed-door session with Obasanjo at his Hilltop residence. Although details of the discussions were not made public, sources said the meeting centered on Nigeria’s economic challenges, national unity, and prospects for the 2027 elections.
Obi later proceeded to Ibadan, where he was received by High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland and former Oyo governor. At Ladoja’s Bodija residence, Obi reportedly discussed issues relating to governance, insecurity, and the need for collaborative efforts to reposition the country.
Speaking briefly after the meeting, Obi stressed that his visits were part of ongoing consultations with elder statesmen and stakeholders across regions.
“Nigeria is at a critical stage, and we must engage our leaders for guidance and collective solutions. These are men of wisdom who have contributed immensely to our nation, and I believe their counsel is invaluable as we work toward a better future”.
The visits sparked speculation over Obi’s political calculations ahead of 2027, with observers linking the shuttle to efforts at strengthening alliances in the Southwest. However, Obi’s associates maintained that the meetings were “purely consultative and focused on national issues.”
Neither Obasanjo nor Ladoja made public remarks after the private discussions, but insiders noted that both leaders expressed concern about economic hardship, rising insecurity, and the need for credible leadership.
Political analysts say Obi’s shuttle underscores his determination to maintain relevance on the national stage while fostering cross-regional relationships that could shape the next election cycle.
