The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has inaugurated a 20-member committee to oversee its forthcoming congress in Cross River State, signaling preparations for grassroots reorganization ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the party announced the move in Abuja on Thursday, saying the committee would supervise ward, local government, and state congresses aimed at electing new executives.

According to a statement signed by PDP National Publicity Secretary, the party said the committee was carefully constituted to reflect inclusiveness and ensure a transparent exercise.

“The 20-member committee will midwife a credible congress that will strengthen our structures in Cross River State. We have mandated them to conduct free, fair, and transparent congresses in line with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act,” the statement read.

The development comes amid internal contestations in the state chapter, where factions have been locked in disputes over leadership and control of party structures. Party faithful believe the congress will provide an opportunity to reunite aggrieved members and reposition the PDP as a formidable opposition in the state.

A source within the state chapter told reporters that stakeholders are optimistic the committee will “restore confidence in the process” and prevent the recurrence of the crises that marred previous congresses.

Meanwhile, the PDP urged members to remain united and support the committee to deliver on its mandate, stressing that discipline and loyalty to the party would be paramount during the exercise.

The congress is expected to commence in the coming weeks, with dates to be officially announced after consultations with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
