The Idoma Traditional Council in Benue State has dismissed reports suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was in any way connected to the recent revocation of a chieftaincy title in the area.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the council described the claim as “baseless, misleading and mischievous,” insisting that the decision to withdraw the title had no political undertones and was not influenced by the presidency.
According to the council, the title in question was revoked strictly in line with traditional and cultural considerations, following established customs guiding the conferment and withdrawal of honours within Idoma land.
“The attention of the Idoma Traditional Council has been drawn to reports linking His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to the revocation of a chieftaincy title. We categorically state that such reports are false. The President has no involvement in our traditional matters,” the statement read.
It further explained that traditional institutions remain non-partisan and guided by heritage, warning those attempting to politicize the issue to desist from dragging the presidency into local affairs.
“The Idoma Traditional Council is committed to preserving the sanctity of our customs and traditions. We therefore caution individuals and groups spreading false narratives to refrain from misleading the public,” the council added.
Community elders and stakeholders have also echoed the council’s position, urging the public to respect traditional institutions and avoid drawing unnecessary political connections.
