Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt General T.Y Danjuma has donated $500,000 to the Ondo State government owned University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo.

The donation, according to a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the university, Mr Isaac Oluyi, is to assist the university towards the development of infrastructure for its Olu Akinkugbe faculty of pharmacy.

He said the receipt of the donation was acknowledged at the board meeting of the Olu Akinkugbe Pharmacy Education Trust (OAPET) held on the 8th of this month. Â

He explained that the OAPET is partnering with the state government and the university in the development of the faculty of Pharmacy of the universityÂ

The Chairman of OAPET, Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi expressed great delight and the university board’s gratitude to General Danjuma for the donation.Â

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Adesegun Fatusi said “the donation will significantly move us forward towards our target of completing and commissioning the Olu Akinkugbe Faculty of Pharmacy building this year”

He reiterated the full commitment of the university management to the commencement of the Doctor of Pharmacy programme in the new academic session, starting this October.Â

Meanwhile, the Centre for Herbal Medicine and Drug Discovery, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo will host “2024 African Traditional Medicine Day” on Wednesday, 29th August, 2024.

The theme of the conference is “Development and Promotion of Indigenous Herbal Medicine to Facilitate Universal Healthcare in Nigeria.”

According to Oluyi, the keynote speaker for the event is Pharmacist Zainab Shariff, the Pioneer Director, Traditional Complementary and Alternative Medicine Department, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.Â

Also expected at the event are Dr Azeez Aderemi, Ag . Chief Executive Officer/Interim Administrator, Federal College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Prof. Koffi Busia, former Director of Health Service, West African Health Organisation.Â
