The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has described the arrest of former governor and serving senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, as a politically motivated move aimed at silencing opposition voices.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its state chairman, Alhaji Bello Goronyo, the party accused the Federal Government and security agencies of using intimidation tactics against prominent PDP leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We strongly condemn the arrest of Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, which we believe is driven by political vendetta rather than any genuine security or legal concerns. This is an attack not just on him, but on democracy and the rights of all Nigerians,” the statement read.

The PDP alleged that the arrest, carried out by operatives of a federal security agency, was orchestrated to weaken the opposition’s influence in the North-West region, where Tambuwal commands significant political support.

The party demanded his immediate and unconditional release, warning that such actions could heighten political tensions and erode public confidence in democratic institutions.

“Senator Tambuwal has always been committed to the unity and progress of this country. Targeting him because of his political beliefs is unacceptable,” Goronyo added.

As of press time, neither the police nor federal authorities had issued an official statement on the reasons for Tambuwal’s arrest, fueling further speculation about its political undertones.
