A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Plant-a-Future Memorial Initiative (PAFMI), has awarded scholarships to 35 indigenes of Ile-Ife in Osun.
The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of PAFMI, Dr Tina Ijiwoye, disclosed this in Ile-Ife on Saturday during the 18th year remembrance of late Dr Moses Ijiwoye, an entrepreneur.
The founder, at the family compound of Moses Ijiwoye on Oranmiyan Street, Arubidi area, Ile-Ife, said the scholarships would eliminate financial barriers to the academic pursuits of the beneficiaries.
According to Ijiwoye, represented by Mrs Adeola Ijiwoye, the scholarships will also ensure that the less privileged have the opportunity to reach the peak of their academic careers.
“We have selected some of the best students from various primary, secondary and tertiary institutions to be awarded scholarships as a tribute to our late father, Dr Moses Ijiwoye.
“The award of the scholarships is a way of paying tribute to the deceased, who touched lives, both within and outside the state, during his lifetime.
“I want to urge the beneficiaries to take the opportunity by working hard to attain better places in life,” she said.
In his welcome address, the event’s chairman, Mr Adeniji Abayomi, thanked PAFMI for the humanitarian gesture extended to the selected students.
Abayomi stressed the need for the state government to embark on programmes that would improve the lives of the less privileged in the state.
The beneficiaries were selected from the following schools: Seventh Day Grammar School, Lady’s Girls High School and St. John Grammar School, Oke Ata.
Others are Moremi High School, Olode Grammar School, and Unique Group of Schools.
Other beneficiaries include the best performing students from the Department of Agriculture Economics and the Department of Economics, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
An education centre and borehole were presented to residents of Oranmiyan Street, around the Arubidi area of Ile Ife.
