Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced on Truth Social that Nigeria will be among countries facing an additional 10% tariff for aligning with what he described as the “Anti‑American policies of BRICS.” He wrote: “Any Country aligning itself with the anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy”.
The announcement came amid a BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, where member nations issued statements warning against unilateral trade barriers and “distortion of trade” by imposing such levies. Trump’s move initially rattled BRICS currencies such as the Indian rupee, South African rand, and Chinese yuan and triggered concern about potential ripple effects on inflation, trade flows, and foreign investment.
Trump’s tariff directive will take effect August 1, following formal “tariff letters” to those nations. It’s part of an escalating trade stance: a 10% base import tariff introduced in April with possible spikes up to 50–70%, depending on negotiations. Market analysts warn that this posture may inject uncertainty into global supply chains, especially for countries like Nigeria whose partners or neighbours have ties to BRICS.
