A major political storm is brewing in Zamfara State as the House of Assembly has threatened to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Dauda Lawal over what lawmakers describe as the “misuse of public funds” in the ongoing renovation of the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau.
The Assembly raised alarm over the allocation of ₦9 billion for the hospital’s facelift, questioning the transparency and value-for-money in the process. Lawmakers are accusing the governor of approving and spending such a huge amount without proper consultation or adherence to due process.
“We cannot sit back and watch billions of naira fly out of the public treasury in the name of renovation without clarity, competitive bidding, or legislative oversight,” one lawmaker said during plenary. The Assembly has issued a 7-day ultimatum demanding detailed financial records and justification for the expenditure or risk facing impeachment proceedings.
Governor Lawal has yet to formally respond to the threat, but sources within the state government insist the renovation is aimed at upgrading the dilapidated facility to world-class status and that all procedures were followed.
