The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association Awka (NAUAA) has unveiled a new scholarship scheme aimed at supporting indigent students to achieve academic excellence.
Dr Ikechukwu Umeh, NAUAA Global President, announced the initiative on Sunday, emphasising its goal to “sow seeds of hope, resilience and opportunity” under the theme: “Empowering Dreams, Building the Future.”
Umeh stated that the alumni body was reaffirming its belief that education was not only a path to personal success but also “the cornerstone of national progress.”
The scholarship, he explained, was a significant step toward giving back to the university and uplifting the next generation, designed to alleviate financial burdens and inspire students to reach their full potential, investing in “leaders, thinkers, creators, and change makers.”
He appealed for support, disclosing that N500,000 was needed for each student to complete their studies, and urged individuals to “adopt a student.”
Beneficiaries will be selected through interviews to ensure genuine indigence.
Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, Chief of Staff to the Anambra State Governor and an alumnus, commended the initiative and pledged to adopt a student himself.
He called on wealthy individuals across the state to embrace this call, contributing to the development of the education sector in their communities.
Chief Ndubusi Nwobu, an alumnus and university council representative, urged students to uphold integrity throughout the selection process.
He reaffirmed his commitment to excellence and service to humanity, pledging to adopt a student and continue supporting his alma mater.
Mr Casmiar Nwafor, Chairman of Orumba North Local Government Area and an alumnus, encouraged student commitment to studies and advised the alumni leadership to formally request local government support for student adoptions as part of their social responsibility.
Dr Obinna Uyaemezina, Chairman of the NAUAA Scholarship and Endowment Committee, assured that beneficiaries would be selected without bias, following meticulous planning.
Mr Izuchukwu Obi, a student, hailed the initiative as “great,” expressing hope for its sustainability, believing it will significantly reduce student drop-out rates.
