An Igbo trader, Blessing Eze, was tragically stabbed to death on Friday, June 6, 2025, during the Eid celebrations in Ifo, Ogun State, by a tout allegedly extorting N1,500 “festival tax” from traders. According to a report by Sahara Reporters, the altercation began when Eze pleaded that she had not made any sales and asked the touts to return later. Eyewitnesses told the platform that her refusal led to an argument, destruction of her goods, and ultimately a fatal stab to the chest.
However, an X user, @Letter_to_jack, later described Sahara Reporters’ account as “incomplete,” revealing that the suspect was not at large but was handed over to a mob by his father after the crime. According to his post, the mob – comprising both Yoruba and Igbo market traders – beat the suspect severely, and despite police intervention, he succumbed to injuries at the hospital. He added that Eze never refused to pay, only stating it was too early, and lamented the boy’s senseless violence during a festive moment.
The Igbo traders’ union has since shut down their businesses in protest, observing a four-day mourning period and demanding government intervention and justice. A meeting is scheduled at the Ifo Police Divisional Headquarters to address the growing tension and ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.
