For Dr. Doyin Okupe, it's final good bye, by Olusanya Awosan

My dear brother, leader, and amiable Boss, very painfully you begin your final departure today, Friday, March 28, 2025.

Words seem inadequate to express the profound pain that engulfs me as it is becoming more clearer, that finally, the doors of those decades of political comradeship, permutations, strategic planning and communication have finally closed and seal comes heavily on it today.

That which was like a dream that the trumpet has sounded for the passage to eternity of Omo Oba Dr. Doyin Okupe is, indeed, no longer a dream. The comradeship journey from the defunct National Republican Convention, Obj’s government and GEJ’s is finally being punctuated and has surely become defunct.

Today, as we gather to bid you farewell on your final journey, my heart aches with a grief that transcends the political sphere. You were not just a political leader and boss but a beloved brother. At every struggle, we were together, except your brief with the Labour Party. At our last outing, where you were chairman at the reception for the retirement of my wife from the public service of Lagos State, you and Madam Lola, despite the medical challenges then, exhibited great love towards my family.

Seriki Magana, our journey together, from the vibrant days of the National Republican Convention, through the transformative years of President Obasanjo’s government, and into the now beloved era of President Jonathan’s tenure, forged a bond of brotherhood that ran deep. You were a constant presence, a source of ideas and uncommon political mobilizer.

Dr. Doyin Okupe was no ordinary man; he was an intellectual giant. His type is very uncommon within the political class in Nigeria. He was a titan, a visionary leader whose unwavering commitment to the betterment of Nigeria burned brightly throughout his life. His political astuteness was undeniable. He possessed a rare ability to navigate the complexities of Nigerian politics with grace and wisdom, always guided by his deep faith and an unyielding belief in the power of dialogue and consensus.

Never afraid of public debate, sound and logical always, Dr. Okupe’s contributions to the political landscape in the country were immense. He was a strategist par excellence, a master communicator who could articulate complex ideas with clarity and conviction. His insights were invaluable, his counsel sought after by many. He was a fierce advocate for the marginalized, a champion of the voiceless, and a true servant-leader who dedicated his life to uplifting others.

Beyond politics, you were a man of deep faith, your actions always reflecting your unwavering reverence for God. This faith imbued you with an uncommon strength and resilience, allowing you to face challenges head-on with grace and determination.

Today, as we commit your mortal remains to the earth, we celebrate a life well-lived, a legacy of purpose, devotion, and unwavering faith. You departure has created a void that will be difficult to fill.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Agonmagbe family and your immediate family at this incredibly difficult time. May the good Lord comfort them and grant them solace in the face of this irreplaceable loss.

Dr. Doyin Okupe, Omo Agbonmagbe, Iperu Akesan, your memory will forever be etched in the annals of Nigerian history. You are already being deeply missed, but your legacy, like the unwavering spirit you embodied, will continue to inspire generations to come.
