The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has indefinitely suspended four lecturers and a class representative over alleged involvement in sorting, a form of extortion.
This move reaffirms the university’s stance on maintaining academic integrity and excellence.
Sorting, a malpractice where students pay cash or offer favours to receive unearned marks, has been a recurring issue in some institutions.
It was learnt that those affected are members of the ESUT College of Medicine (ESUCOM).
Speaking on the development, the university’s Registrar, Ambrose Ugwu, confirmed that the suspensions followed allegations of extorting students for grade upgrades.
“In the College of Medicine, we have suspended four lecturers for soliciting payments from students to improve their results. Some class reps have been known to go around, after marking exams, collecting small amounts from students in exchange for ensuring that the lecturers upgrade their marks,” Ugwu stated.
He further explained that the lecturers allegedly conspired with the class representative, who acted as a middleman, collecting money from students under the pretext that they had failed or received low grades.
“Consequently, four lecturers and the class representative have been suspended indefinitely. In the future, we may disclose additional details,” the Registrar added.
However, he withheld the names of those affected, citing ongoing investigations.
It is worth recalling that in August 2024, ESUT dismissed six lecturers over issues related to certificate forgery, sexual harassment, and grade alteration. (The Sun)
