South Africa is reeling after two separate mass shootings occurred hours apart, claiming at least 27 lives in the country’s latest wave of gun violence.
The first attack occurred late Saturday evening at a local tavern near Johannesburg, where gunmen opened fire on patrons, leaving 17 people dead and several others injured.
Hours later in the early morning, a second shooting erupted at a venue in Cape Town, resulting in 10 additional fatalities. In total, at least 26 people were wounded across both sites, with several remaining in critical condition.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that multi-disciplinary task teams have been deployed to both regions to investigate and track down the perpetrators.
”A full-scale manhunt has been launched to apprehend those responsible for these acts of senseless violence,” Mathe said in a statement. “We are mobilizing all available intelligence and forensic resources to piece together the motives and track the suspects.”
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu addressed reporters, condemning the bloody attacks and urging the public to assist law enforcement.
”These violent acts are a grave assault on our communities,” Mchunu stated. “Our specialized crime units are working around the clock. Those behind these horrific acts will be found and brought to justice.”
South Africa continues to combat high rates of violent crime and illegal firearm proliferation, with authorities launching heightened police operations across high-risk provinces. No suspects have been taken into custody yet, and investigations into both incidents remain ongoing.
