The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uncovered an alleged plot by anti-democratic forces to threaten, intimidate, and kidnap ad-hoc electoral staff, particularly members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The critical intelligence disclosure was made on Friday morning, November 6, 2026, by the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a high-level operational assessment meeting held at the INEC State Headquarters in Lokoja, Kogi State.

Addressing senior commission officials and field staff, Prof. Amupitan revealed that security intelligence reports indicate targeted plans by political desperate actors to disrupt poll logistics by instilling fear and abducting field staff, with a strong focus on corps members who form the backbone of polling unit administration across the country.

”We have uncovered systemic attempts and schemes calculated to threaten, intimidate, and kidnap our ad-hoc electoral staff, especially the NYSC corps members deployed for election duties,” Prof. Amupitan stated. “I want to assure our staff and the general public that we are actively collaborating with the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies to dismantle these threats and guarantee maximum security for every election worker.”

The INEC boss issued a stern warning to electoral officers against taking bribes or succumbing to partisan influence. He charged all workers to act strictly as impartial custodians of electoral integrity, noting that any staff member found aiding political actors or compromising the process would face prosecution under the Electoral Act.

”The success and credibility of the 2027 general elections depend heavily on your commitment to neutrality,” Amupitan added. “You must discharge your responsibilities without fear, favor, or partisan bias.”

Responding to the development, the Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its readiness to provide complete tactical protection for all temporary and permanent electoral officers.

Speaking on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu had issued direct mandates to all State Commissioners of Police.

”The Inspector-General of Police has ordered decisive security deployments around all ad-hoc personnel, NYSC camps, and election infrastructure,” Hundeyin said. “Political actors attempting to use hate speech, incitement, or violence to intimidate electoral workers will be arrested and prosecuted immediately.”

INEC maintained that security planning alongside the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) remains ongoing to neutralize security vulnerabilities well ahead of the 2027 polls.
